Positive Energy Districts

This abstract has open access
Abstract Summary
As cities around the world grapple with the challenges of rapid urbanization, climate change, and resource constraints, the concept of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) has emerged as a transformative solution to foster sustainable urban development. The learning track on PEDs will focus on exploration into the concept, planning and designing PEDs, and policy frameworks. The seminar will start with the introduction to PEDs by defining and contextualizing them. This background will help the audience understand the significance of PEDs in addressing contemporary urban challenges and their potential to create resilient, green, and prosperous cities. In addition, it will also introduce the multifaceted benefits of PEDs, encompassing economic advantages, environmental preservation, and social inclusivity. Then, we will discuss the integration of PEDs into urban development, emphasizing the role of (smart) technologies, and green investments, as well as community engagement in creating sustainable and equitable urban spaces. This will demonstrate the convergence of urban planning, community well-being, and technology to shape the future of cities. Finally, we will provide an overview of potential government policies essential for PED implementation, ensuring energy justice. Overall, this session will offer an extensive examination of Positive Energy Districts, blending theory, practical examples, and policy insights. This session is intended to be a learning track. The objective of this learning track is to provide a platform for knowledge sharing, innovation showcase, raise awareness, and familiarize the audience with a tool for urban energy transition as PEDs. The intended audience includes the general public, local communities, researchers, policymakers, and other interested parties. The session can take a hybrid format in case the expected co-speakers are not able to travel to Amsterdam.
