Overview In this abstract, we propose organizing a workshop for the collaborative exploration of future scenarios for smart renewable energy systems design at Amsterdam SouthEast. Local energy generation and storage combined with smart technologies can create opportunities for communities, households, and other actors to participate in new forms of political organization, social collaboration, and economic exchange. While such emerging renewable energy infrastructures have the potential to provide agency to bottom-up actors and cater to their needs, there are also risks that disadvantaged social groups are unable to benefit fairly, that incumbent economic paradigms are reinforced, and that control over the technology lands with corporate actors. Purpose The proposed workshop will mobilize a design anthropological approach to explore future energy scenarios using concrete, tangible, and visual means. The future scenarios, which are the input to the workshop, are constructed using several sources: 1. We draw from empirical data gathered through our participation in the Local Inclusive Future Energy (LIFE) project, an interdisciplinary, multi-actor collaboration to design a smart energy platform inclusively. These data provide insight into the needs of residents from a disadvantaged neighbourhood and the tensions that emerge from conflicting interests and divergent actor strategies. 2. We use anthropological perspectives on socio-economic exchanges, which provide an understanding of the potential reciprocities between people, institutions, and other actors. This workshop will explore what entities, beyond energy and money, can be exchanged between actors in future energy systems and what (un)fair exchanges would look like. 3. We use perspectives on political power in energy infrastructures to explore different modes of (de)centralization of control over energy infrastructures and their design. These provide insight into the constraints and enablers for diverse actors to exercise agency within future smart energy systems and in the design process towards it. Target Audience We invite diverse participants from various backgrounds, including government, businesses, academics, and professionals in energy transition, urban design, governance, and anthropology, to collaboratively explore these scenarios. There is no specific knowledge required. Knowledge and Outcomes Participants who engage in the workshop will: - Gain an understanding of the future energy scenarios, trends, and developments that might promote certain outcomes over others at Amsterdam SouthEast. - Collaboratively identify pathways towards preferable and fair future energy outcomes - Gain an understanding of socio-economic exchange and political power perspectives The discussions and the outcomes of the workshop will contribute to our research on design strategies for emerging renewable energy infrastructures and the design of a local energy system in Amsterdam South-East through the LIFE project.
