Abstract Summary
Workshop proposal for AMS conference by The Green Village For the AMS Conference: Reinventing the City, scheduled for April 23rd-25th, 2024 we want to propose the workshop: biobased building - from testing ground to practice. In this engaging session, we aim to bring together professionals from the biobased construction sector to expedite the adoption of sustainable innovations, with a particular focus on the implementation of biobased materials for existing and new buildings in Amsterdam. The Green Village promotes sustainable innovation and bridge the gap between research and practical application. We serve as the testing ground where researchers and entrepreneurs can experiment with their innovations in a realistic environment. In our field lab, around ten biobased materials are currently being tested and are ready to be scaled up. Purpose: Our goal is to create a collaborative space for professionals in the biobased construction sector, accelerating the adoption of sustainable innovations, especially in the context of incorporating biobased materials for Amsterdam housing corporations. The objective of this workshop is to foster biobased innovations and to understand why they are not currently being applied and what is required to make the use of biobased building materials possible. Successful outcomes in our proposed workshop will pave the way for further development of the biobased innovations from our field lab, which will be applicable to various pilot locations in Amsterdam. We provide the innovations, and you assess the scaling potential. Teaching Strategy/Technique: Throughout the session, participants, primarily professionals from the biobased building sector, will collaboratively construct a timeline, marking various pilot locations. In close collaboration with housing corporations, we will identify suitable pilot locations in Amsterdam. As facilitators, we will guide this process. As The Green Village operates in a regulation-free environment, this is a unique opportunity to take the initial steps on the timeline. During the workshop, we can collectively explore and test the challenges and solutions for the use of biobased construction materials. This hands-on approach ensures active engagement and practical insights. The workshop will feature an engaging discussion on the practical case studies of Amsterdam housing corporations, biobased building professionals and researchers, providing insights into how these entities can incorporate more biobased construction materials into their building renovations. Attendees will gain valuable knowledge on navigating the challenges and discovering effective solutions in a regulated environment. Target Audience: This workshop is tailored for professionals and researchers working in the biobased building sector. Participants are expected to have basic knowledge about the biobased building market or experience working with housing corporations. This foundational understanding will enrich the collaborative learning experience, allowing participants to delve deeper into the intricacies of biobased construction and its practical application in housing projects.
